April is Limb Loss Awareness Month. Almost 2 million people are living with limb loss and limb differences in this country today and another 28 million are at risk for amputation. There are over 500 amputations a day, and this number is only expected to increase. The Amputee Coalition and COPAA are committed to creating awareness of the unique challenges facing amputees in their everyday life, at work and at play.
The physical effects of amputation are visible, but the psychological and psycho-social aspects of losing a limb often go unnoticed and untreated. Amputees face issues surrounding insurance equity, accessibility in the community and resources to increase the independence and quality of life of all amputees.
If you know someone who can help support us, please tell them your story. By increasing awareness and our fundraising base, we can bring the services and resources to amputees in our community in a very personal and real way. Please support COPAA this month and throughout the year by joining us at a meeting and spreading the word. And "show your mettle" by letting others see your metal ( prosthesis, wheelchair, walker, crutches) to show them that you’re not different, you’re definitely special and awesome!
Our meetings this month are meeting April 11th in both our Bradford and Beverly locations at 6pm. And as always, please reach out by email or on facebook if you have any questions or we can help you in any way!
